No-Go on Halloween Meet

Posted by Kevin Doak on Friday at: 10:48am (October 30th, 2009)
A work conflict will keep me from going to the TYR Grand Prix meet in Indianapolis this weekend. I still think it's unfortunate that they would need to schedule a meet on Halloween. I just feel as though lots of swimmers have kids and wouldn't want to miss their son or daughters fun evening. For the sake of the organizers, I hope it's well attended, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if it wasn't.

TYR Grand Prix at IUPUI

Posted by Kevin Doak on Wednesday at: 6:40am (October 28th, 2009)
It wasn't until tonight that I realized that the TYR Grand Prix SCM meet was this weekend in Indianapolis. It didn't even cross my mind since its halloween weekend as well. Sort of odd that they would schedule it during a pseudo "holiday". I'm 50/50 on whether I'll attend. Not that I have any crazy weekend halloween plans, but I'm certainly not prepared to race. The 4+ hour drive makes the whole process a little less appealing. I do always have a great time in Indianapolis though, I would gladly go back!

Swam with EMU two days in a row

Posted by Kevin Doak on Saturday at: 7:39pm (October 24th, 2009)
I had a chance to hop in with EMU on Friday and swam for an hour and a half. Unfortunately had to get out early for an appointment, I would have loved to stay in for the sprint set they were doing. Today I woke up early to join their Saturday morning practice. It was around 5,000 yards followed by 4x100's MAX on the 12:00. The team was relieved to see 4x100's instead of the typical 6x100's!

IUPUI, West Bloomfield and EMUswim.com

Posted by Kevin Doak on Friday at: 12:03pm (October 23rd, 2009)
I've decided to attend both the West Bloomfield and TYR Grand Prix at IUPUI in Indianapolis next month. I've been to the IUPUI meet the last two years and always seem to swim pretty well there. The West Bloomfield meet has just never worked with my schedule but I'm hoping to attend this year.

Morning Practice!

Posted by Kevin Doak on Tuesday at: 1:10pm (October 20th, 2009)
I arose extra early today to partake in my first morning practice in a very long time. Lately my 7:30pm-9:00pm schedule isn't working as well as I had hoped and I need to switch it up. Today's practice put a big smile on my face for a few reasons. I took my time swimming my workout, usually I'm rushed to just get in some yardage before I get back to work. With a wide open morning schedule, I was relaxed and swam at my own pace. I worked on speed kicking, pulling and vertical kicking.

Busy, but exciting things happening!

Posted by Kevin Doak on Monday at: 2:53am (October 19th, 2009)
Just been slammed with work lately. I got in the pool on Saturday at EMU before their Intersquad meet and swam a brief workout. I stuck around for the entire meet and took about 1,700 pictures for the team website I run. I received a very nice email from one of the parents thanking me for my hard work I contribute to EMUswim.com. I will keep her name private, but I hope she doesn't mind me sharing her heartfelt words here:

Knee?!

Posted by Kevin Doak on Friday at: 11:07am (October 16th, 2009)
I was disappointed to drive all the way to the pool for my evening swim tonight to find it closed for a high school meet. Missed another day this week. I need to plan my workouts much better.

I woke up from a nap this evening with some severe knee pain. I know for a FACT that I didn't hit it in any way recently. As I'm writing this I'm remembering that during work today I remained in a squated stance for a few minutes on end multiple times. Its hard for me to believe something so small could cause this much discomfort but there's nothing else to blame it on.

Monday off, Tuesday on

Posted by Kevin Doak on Tuesday at: 5:20pm (October 13th, 2009)
I took Monday off for some rest after Sundays meet. Today I'm back in the pool and plan on doing dryland training later tonight. As the leaves begin to change here in Michigan I'm hoping to make it to a few metroparks and enjoy the fall weather. I'm way overdue on rollerblading after my ankle injury and I have to make up for it before the snow hits.

Time to hop in the pool!

Milan Results

Posted by Kevin Doak on Monday at: 2:10pm (October 12th, 2009)
Shortly after arriving at the Milan High School, they informed us that the timing system was down but they would be hand timing everybody. I was disappointed but I had already come all that way to swim and wasn't about to leave. Apparently the people who pre-registered knew about the timing issue which was the reason for the drastically low attendance at 37 swimmers! Since there's always an element of human error to manual timing, combined with High School girls text messaging while timing, I wouldn't take the times seriously. It ended up being a mediocre meet for me.

Hartland Community Rec Center

Posted by Kevin Doak on Sunday at: 2:01am (October 11th, 2009)
I swam a short practice tonight at the Hartland Community Rec Center. I kept it brief since I have a meet in the morning. I topped off my practice with a few trips down the waterslide! I've always wanted to get a waterslide on video and tonight I made it happen with my waterproof camera. I'll process the videos and post them here! Below is a picture of the pool area:

I know when to get out

Posted by Kevin Doak on Friday at: 11:19pm (October 9th, 2009)
I jumped in the pool tonight for my typical 3,000 yard practice. I felt great after my 500 warmup and 5x100's kick on the 1:30. I was making the 100's on the 1:20 so I knew I was performing pretty well. I started my 5x100's IM, my first 100 felt great. My second 100 felt like something drained every ounce of my energy at the 50 yard wall. I finished the 100 and hung out on the wall for a minute to determine what could have happened. I knew I didn't eat a lot today and when I began piecing together my diet for the day I realized I was running on empty.

Meet this weekend!

Posted by Kevin Doak on Friday at: 7:01pm (October 9th, 2009)
I'm back in it! I've lost a pound each day for the last 4 days. I'm sure partially from the fact that I've averaged 17 hour work days, but I've also been eating plenty and in the pool 1 hour each day. I feel good and I'm happy to be down closer to my ideal weight. I'll be in the pool later and hoping to visit Coach Jones again today.

I have the Milan Masters Meet this weekend, I'm excited to race again for the first time in 2 months!

Visiting Coach Jones

Posted by Kevin Doak on Wednesday at: 3:25am (October 7th, 2009)
Today I made it a priority to visit Coach Jones in hospital. This is one of those times I wish I could write more on my blog, but it's not appropriate. I'll keep it simple:

Brighton/EMU swimming history lesson

Posted by Kevin Doak on Tuesday at: 2:11am (October 6th, 2009)
I had a chance to swim at my hometown Brighton High School pool tonight. As I enter the pool area I'm always greeted with fond memories of my age group swimming days. Although EMU's Jones Natatorium is my favorite pool, nothing quite feels like home like the Brighton High School pool. The few times I've practiced there since I graduated in '99 have been with the high school team in a structured training environment.

In the water 6 days a week

Posted by Kevin Doak on Saturday at: 2:10pm (October 3rd, 2009)

I had a chance to swim at EMU yesterday before taking some photo's for the University Team. They're hoping these pictures will be featured on a poster which will be distributed around campus and to local businesses. After a little photoshop work, I removed the tile floor and the pool in the background, this is what was left:

Been horrible on updates!

Posted by Kevin Doak on Thursday at: 6:18pm (October 1st, 2009)
I've done a really poor job on updating this lately! The good news is that I've been in the water every day and doing dryland! I'm eager to bury myself in training even more. Lately I've been swimming for only 45mins to an hour each day but I know I'm making progress. I need to lose these 10 lbs I gained while being lazy! Weight is holding steady at 177 (whoa!).
