FINA

Posted by Kevin Doak on Wednesday at: 10:15pm (April 30th, 2008)

I had a few people ask what "FINA" stands for. FINA is the governing body of swimming, it means "Fédération Internationale de Natation". You can find world rankings on their site: http://www.fina.org. My current rankings are:

50m Back LCM: 95th in the world (26.75)
100m Back LCM: 107th in the world (57.00)
50m Back SCM: 64th in the world (25.15)

No rest for the meet this weekend

Posted by Kevin Doak on Tuesday at: 2:38am (April 29th, 2008)
Another great day training, I've been thinking about the meet at EMU this coming weekend. I'm not going to rest up at all before the meet. This means I probably won't have very impressive times, however, I think it will still be great long course practice.

Jones Natatorium Panoramic Pictures

Posted by Kevin Doak on Sunday at: 10:37pm (April 27th, 2008)

I took a few cool pictures at the Jones pool yesterday before practicing, they are posted in the pictures section of the site

I like these panoramic pictures because it's rare to see the Jones Natatorium totally empty. This is where I train every day.

That meet was incredible!

Posted by Kevin Doak on Sunday at: 2:03am (April 27th, 2008)

I volunteered at the disability meet today. I was both proud and amazed to be part of this experience! I've watched and participated in countless meets in my life, but not a single one was as inspiring or smile inducing. These athletes are incredible. I didn't know what to expect going into it, I was sure I'd see some great swims considering their conditions, but this was just awe inspiring! I saw athletes without limbs just absolutely HAULING through the water, great stroke form and really good times!

Long Course Disability Meet

Posted by Kevin Doak on Saturday at: 1:01pm (April 26th, 2008)

I'm headed to go watch and hopefully volunteer at the Long Course Disability meet today at EMU. I'll practice after the meet is over. I posted a new video of some practice starts. I've been experimenting with a new type of backstroke start, I haven't decided if this new start is faster or more efficient. I've been using the video at half speed and quarter speed to analyze it. The full speed (hold on to your hats) and the half speed versions are posted

EMU Long Course Meet is a GO

Posted by Kevin Doak on Friday at: 1:33pm (April 25th, 2008)

I received an email back from the Meet Director of a LCM meet hosted by Bulldog Aquatic Club at EMU on May 3-4th. He let me know there is still room in the meet. I'm unofficially entered in the 50 free, 100 back, and 200 back. I'm excited to swim my first LCM Eastern Meet. The best part is that my little cousin Derik will be swimming at the meet as well since it's primarily an age group meet.

Today I practiced with Eastern, that was a good change of pace, thanks to Coach Linn for welcoming me at his practice. More later.

My Coach

Posted by Kevin Doak on Friday at: 2:12am (April 25th, 2008)

I swam late last night. I was running late and only had 45 minutes to swim before they turned off the lights at 9pm in the natatorium. I really wanted to get in 3,000 meters which I normally take over an hour to swim. I decided to do 6 x 500's on the 7.5 minute backstroke. I don't normally do distances that long during a set, but wanted to reach my 3,000 meter mark to stay on track with my training. They only reason I'm writing this is because it was during this set that I realized I have the ideal coach for my situation.

EMU Long Course Meet?

Posted by Kevin Doak on Thursday at: 3:31am (April 24th, 2008)
A friend Dave, who used to swim for Toledo and now coaches told me about a Long Course Meters (LCM) USA Swimming meet at EMU on May 3-4th. It looks like it might be good LCM practice. I emailed the meet director to see if I can still enter. I'll swim the 100 Back, 200 Back and 50 Free if they will still let me in. We shall see.

No need to take a day off, I'm back in the pool today along with doing dryland and weight training. I love every minute of it, I'm getting in even better shape, feel healthy, and having a blast.

I just got the heads up that Matthew Marshall broke my 50 back SCY National Record today at 23.03 (I was a 23.06).

It will be mine again... oh yes... it will be mine.

Masters American Record!

Posted by Kevin Doak on Friday at: 9:52pm (April 11th, 2008)
As it turns out my 100 Back LCM time of 57.00 is faster than the FINA Masters 25-29 World Record time but it doesn't count because it was performed under a USA-S sanctioned meet, therefore it only counts as a Masters American Record. The records book will now read, World Record: 57.45 (Jon Winter), American Record: 57.00 (Kevin Doak).

Time Trial 50 Back

Posted by Kevin Doak on Sunday at: 8:21am (April 6th, 2008)
I time trialed the 50 back for the heck of it before I left Ohio State. I got a best time of 26.75, but I was hoping for a low 26 considering I was a 27.26 for my first 50 of my fastest 100 back yesterday.

Olympic Trial Cut!

Posted by Kevin Doak on Sunday at: 2:18am (April 6th, 2008)
The Ohio State Grand Prix went well overall, I dropped 2 tenths in my 50 free from a 24.47 to a 24.24. I had a bad 100 back prelims with a 59.18, my best was a 58.54. Finals went much better with a lifetime best and Olympic Trial cut 57.00!

Ohio State Grand Prix Psych Sheet

Posted by Kevin Doak on Tuesday at: 3:45pm (April 1st, 2008)
I downloaded the psych sheet today for the Ohio State Grand Prix meet this weekend, it looks like it will be a very fast meet. I'm seeded 72nd in the 100 backstroke (16th with my LCM time) and 115th in the 50 free (52nd with my LCM time). Both events are on Saturday so if I'm lucky I'll make it back in the 100 back due to the fact that it's top 24 which include the bonus heat. I'll need to be very fast in the morning or I'll be watching the 100 back from the deck.
