23.62 Leading off the 200 Medley
I split a 23.62 leading off the 200 Medley Relay. That time becomes more impressive when I tell you that I was rushing to the pool only having found out about the relay an hour prior to the start! I was weaving through traffic on the way to Georgia Tech, parked and ran into the Rec Center. I never made it to the locker room so I dashed into a bathroom and threw on my suit. I ran down on deck looking for my relay. When I found them they had already blown the first whistle and another teammate was about to dive in the water for me! I quickly replaced him at the edge of the pool and had about 10 seconds to stretch my arms. I can't remember the last swim I did totally dry (no warmup). I jumped in and prepared for a 50 Backstroke. I knew I would do ok because it was such a short race.
The gun went off and I had a conservative but good start, decent underwaters, good breakout and turn. I could see I was just ahead of the other guys. I whipped my arms to a strong finish and saw a 23.62 on the board, it was the fastest split of the day! Not bad for a dry swim!
The relay next to us from Georgia Masters broke our National Record with a 1:30.47. I actually went to college with the Breaststroker Sean Joyce. Congrats on the new National Record! The relay with Cullen Jones went a 1:34.15
