100 Back time trial

Posted by Kevin Doak on Sunday at: 9:15pm (June 8th, 2008)

Well the time trial 100 back went better than yesterday but still not as well as I had hoped. I went a 59.02. It would have been nice to at least see a 58 up there, but I'll take it. I'm not sure of my splits but from timing the video it looks like it was a 27.62. If that's around what it was that's not a horrible place to be, lately I've been a 27.2 - 27.4 on a good swim. I'll be interested to see the real splits when I return for the final session to watch.

A few things I noticed about this race:

  • I slipped on the Omega pad, I'm not a fan of the Omega pads now
  • I took it out alright but still felt like I didn't have a good rhythm in my stroke, felt a little choppy
  • I remember when I had my 57.00 race I was thinking A LOT about hand and arm position on my 2nd 50 as well as really attacking the underwater kicking. This race I didn't even think about it... not good
  • I think I might still be in awe of this facility and this experience. During my 2nd 50 meters I looked up and saw the huge olympic rings with the USA logo under the scoreboard and sort of lost focus.
  • I lacked motivation in this race. I can't exactly understand why. It could have been a poor attitude about the race after a bad start but I found myself unmotivated to give 100% on the last 50.
  • I really miss the 25 meter line, it gives me a gauge on where I am in the race, I find it helpful in other facilities.
  • I hit the lane line twice. There is nothing but black on the ceiling, no lines of any sort to get your bearings on. This is still much better than swimming outdoors though.

I wanted to congratulate Derick Roe, a fellow EMU swimmer who made it back (qualified for finals) in the 50 free with a time of 23.40 which was 24th. He wasn't very pleased with his swim but he's lucky to have another shot at it tonight in the C final.

I've already been thinking about all the things I can improve on after this weekend. I've analyzed everything from what I eat to how long I sleep. There are many improvements on the list already. I'm really glad to have had this experience, at this facility, in this city, at this hotel, and at this airport. I'm well versed in how to get around town and where to find good food and at what times. There are many procedures to understand about how this facility is run that I was confused about the first day. When I return I will know exactly what to expect. I feel well prepared to be back here in 3 weeks to perform my best. I will look at this weekend as a great learning experience. It was filled with many new experiences which will prepare me for the Olympic Trials.
