Great Swimming!

Posted by Kevin Doak on Sunday at: 4:57am (May 18th, 2008)

What a great day of speculating swimming! I saw some great athletes swim some amazing times. Kara Lynn did great in her 100 free to finish 5th overall. Luke (actually James is his first name) didn't make it back in the 100 Breast but it was a very fast event, it took an Olympic trial cut to make the top 27. I swam twice for practice, I'm feeling very worn down, I feel like I'm allergic to something out here. I've sneezed so much my abs actually hurt. I have some allergy medicine I'll try for tomorrow.

The weather was beautiful today, not a cloud in the sky but it was 100 degrees and the sun is brutal. I just feel drained from spending a few hours outdoors. I wasn't even in the sun that long, maybe 45 minutes total, the rest was in the shade. I'm just not used to the temps. The pool is fairly warm as well, it's probably unavoidable with how warm the weather is. I was surprised to see so many international teams today. I knew it was an international meet but I didn't expect it to draw so many athletes from Japan, Australia, the UK and Africa. I was impressed with the diversity I saw on the pool deck.

I swim the 50 free in prelims tomorrow, they take the top 27 to return to swim again in the evening. I don't expect to make it back for finals. I'm seeded 72nd or so, I would have to drop about a second to return in the evening. The 50 free isn't really my event. The sun has proven to be an obstacle for me swimming backstroke in practice. I'm wearing tinted goggles but it's really not enough. I'm going to look for different goggles before Saturday's 100 backstroke. It's been a great trip so far!
