The Joys of Fuller Pool

Posted by Kevin Doak on Wednesday at: 10:42pm (July 21st, 2010)

I decided to skip a day of EMU's practices and enjoy the sunshine.  I headed out to Fuller Pool in Ann Arbor for the afternoon.  It was much less insane than July 5th since parents had a higher chance of being at work today but the frustrating pool patrons were in full force as usual.  I really wish my posts about public pools were more positive.  The highlights are always watching parents spending time with their kids and the sunshine.  I have these moments when I'm swimming backstroke and a cloud passes in front of the sun, you get a break from the heat for a few minutes and it really is the most amazing sight, the variation of the density of the cloud gives it a really cool look.  With my tinted, polarized goggles, the sky is bright blue contrasted against the white clouds.  The sun's rays shine around the cloud and you see the beams surround the cloud's edges.  Makes me wish I had a camera each and every time.

My workout was pretty frustrating, people walking into the lap lanes as usual.   I was doing the math and I was swimming 2.3 times faster than them.  I'll never understand why they don't have a "Slow / Medium / Fast" lane designation.  Seems like it would make sense to swim with somebody of a similar speed instead of passing a person every length.  I wrote a 4200 meter workout and only finished 3200 because I couldn't do my sprints without running into people.  I began practicing with 2 others in my lane and finally gave up when it was me and 4 others.

The sunshine felt great though, got a little color.
