The Joys of a Community Pool

Posted by Kevin Doak on Sunday at: 4:46pm (March 28th, 2010)
It was a rough Saturday as the Scuba Diving class repeatedly swam under, close to, and collided with my body as I attempted to train. I will never understand how the trajectory of lap swimmer swimming within two lane lines can be so confusing for a scuba diver. I basically pass the same area every 15 seconds or so, repeatedly, for an hour straight. Yet, without fail, one of these divers thinks its no problem to surface in the middle of my lane with no regard to his surroundings at all. I really hope these guys look for boats in the open water, cause I don't give them a fantastic life expectency based on what I've seen.

My main gripe is that I have just as much right to be in the pool as they do, I take up a single lane (I'm typically the only lap swimmer) and I always make sure they know I'm there in hopes of avoiding this daily collision. If they're there first, I check in with them. If I'm there first, they offer no such respect for the others they share the pool with.

Notice I haven't mentioned the pool, or the group. I have no intention of pinpointing anybody. I'm just ranting because I've dealt with this for months with zero improvement, its really quite insulting what I witness...

My request of the scuba divers of the world is a simple one:

Just please be aware of your surroundings and respect others in the water.

Dodging scuba divers, along with seeing oblivious parents ignore how their children are acting while playing with heavy fiberglass objects in the pool was enough for me to leave 800 meters early. It was all just too much of a distraction to effectively train.

Therefore today I'm accepting an invitation to swim at Michigan State University with some fellow Masters swimmers! I'm really looking forward to it!
