I needed that!

For the last week now I've been training back at EMU. Its revolutionized my work ethic and given me some much needed confidence in my swimming. Today I was in the pool at the same time as a few EMU swimmers who have just finished up their big conference meet. A few of them put on some tech suits from last season and jumped in for some time trials long course meters. I had swam about 1,200 meters and was warmed up just as I received a challenge from one of the swimmers to race a 50 meter fly.

I quickly weighed out the situation. (For privacy I won't use his name) He was wearing a tech suit, recently tapered and at the end of his 4 years of swimming having just achieved lifetime best times in the Breaststroke... Yet, he was no butterflier.

I was warmed up, a little tired, feeling slightly overweight wearing a drag suit and didn't have a starting block like he did. I'm not too shabby at the butterfly though.

I jumped out of the pool and backed up from the edge. If he gets a block, I get to run a few steps!

They tell me it was over after the underwaters. I popped up ahead and maintained my lead, perhaps even pulled away a bit. Two hand times had me at 26.8! Really not too bad for me considering I was a 25.4 at Long Course Nationals in August. I shook my competitors hand and warmed it down a 200 with a smile on my face.

Minutes later I thought to myself... "I can do better than that". I stripped off the drag suit and got up on the starting block with two hand timers using a gun start method. I had some good underwater kicks and a decent stroke. I was sucking down water at times but overall not a bad race! I touched and heard "25.6"! The second timer had a 25.7, but what does he know?! He obviously took 0.10 seconds too long to hit the stopwatch.

Overall, I'm so very glad I had such a reinforcing impromptu time trial going into the Milford meet this weekend. I was beginning to doubt my training a bit.

0.20 slower than my Nationals time really isn't too bad :)
