I've often discussed how much a nice facility meant to my training. Lately I've realized how much this opinion has to do with my current training situation.
Recently I've found it increasingly difficult to stay on task and work hard at practice. I've sort of lost that drive I've enjoyed in the last few years. This drive has been fading since I moved away from Ann Arbor, and therefore, away from EMU and the pool I appreciate so much. By helping out EMU's team recently I've had the chance, and made the time to train at the Jones Natatorium. It took me a few days to realize that simply being in that pool, made all the difference in the world.
I believe now more than ever that a facility is a competitive advantage. Not to say you can't accomplish great things swimming in a community pool with children hitting you with foam noodles... but these last few months have been a slap in the face to me, and I've finally learned what my recent training issue is.
Over the last few days I've traveled back to EMU to train, and it's made all the difference in the world. I have my drive back. I'm pushing myself, and I look forward to practice. It's an incredible feeling! I have to send a big thank you to Mike Jones for his insight during the planning and construction of that amazing facility, my favorite pool on the planet. The Michael H. Jones Natatorium!
I'll be back soon.
