I hope I don't eat my words if I don't swim well...
I actually feel pretty good! My shoulders are still broken down and sore but overall I feel solid. I'm 99% injury free! My elbows are in good shape and I put in some uninterrupted training this weekend considering the holiday.
I got to practice a few minutes late on purpose so I could talk to the coaches. I was instructed to swim 1,500 meters and then do some pace swimming. When my 1,500 warm up was done I had Coach Bailey Weathers time me for some pace swimming. "Pace" is what it sounds like, you swim at "race pace" for short distances to get a feel for the speed.
My pace set was 50 meters backstroke build, 30 seconds rest, 50 meters backstroke fast.
50 Build: 30.2
50 Fast: 28.2
I was quite pleased with my times considering I was wearing a drag suit and swimming against a malfunctioning water jet in my lane. My first 50 started out slow (build = from slow to fast) and I finished swimming fast so 30.2 seconds was nowhere near the fastest I could swim. The second 50 meters seemed well paced with a good finish. The best part was that I was swimming very smooth with a controlled turnover.
I felt great so I warmed it down and ended up having a constructive conversation with EMU Coach Peter Linn regarding body rotation and arm/shoulder rotation speed. Unfortunately he reiterated I "caught water" better in my college days, he also clued me in as to why I might bounce when I swim fast backstroke. I consider it kind of a breakthrough and I ENTIRELY credit to him! I'm confident this new information will permanently change my backstroke races for the better!
I'll go into more detail when I have time. Thanks for reading!
