26.2 Gunstart 50m Fly and Tech Suit News

As I reached the end of my 3,800 meter practice, the last set was:

6 x [50 pace + 50 easy]

I decided to do the first two from a dive fly. I was surprised to hear a "26.5" as I touched the wall since my best in a meet is a 25.84. I wasn't swimming all out so I knew I could do a little better. I swam the 50 Easy and got back up on the blocks to see if I could lower it. My second one was a 26.2 and I wasted time with a bad finish. I'm pleasantly surprised at my butterfly speed at the end of a practice. Unfortunately, as usual, my speed didn't last much longer. I split a 25.5 freestyle and dropped to a 29.0 backstroke towards the end.

I've been running to and from practice each day from where I park about a mile from the pool. I find it's a great warmup for practice.

I got to catch up with my friend Emily Brunemann, a swimmer from U of M who recently made the World Champ Team in the open water 5k and 10k races. As I inquired upon her experiences in Rome, I was surprised to hear that hey make the athletes swim those races back to back on two days.... Ouch. I'm very proud of her finishes and she should be too. She placed 9th in the 5k and 24th in the 10k race! She's telling me all this as she shrugs off her finishes... as if 9th and 24th IN THE WORLD isn't something to brag about to every living being you come in contact with! Don't worry Emily, I'll handle the bragging for you.

There's so much news in swimming right now with the Tech Suit issue. Michael Phelps coach Bob Bowman is threatening to pull Phelps from all international competitions till all tech suits are banned. This is after Phelps was beat for the first time since 2005 in the 200 Free by a german wearing a better suit. It raises the issue once again... was it the man, or the suit? They're saying now that it could be April or May 2010 till they're permanently banned. I won't ever be wearing one... for many reasons. I would never want a time I achieved to be in a suit that is banned. We're all safe wearing "jammer" sytle or brief style suits, they'll never ban those. And it's really the only way to be sure it's the swimmer that's earned the time, not the suit.

I will throw away my times I achieved in a Speedo LZR in 2008. I don't want to ever think that a suit improved my times. It was only a few swims, but I'm done with that. More details on that issue another day. I will wear a Speedo Brief at USMS Long Course Nationals, I will be proud to know that my swims were achieved by my hard work, ability and dedication... nothing else.
