I've recently lowered my maximum practice distance from 7,000 gradually to 5,000 meters a day. I felt I was getting a little too worn down. I notice we're swimming a little more burst speed work in practice lately now that everybody in the water is tapering for their early August meets.
The other day we did a broken 200 (50+50+100) and I started off really well but that last 100 meters finished me off. I split a :28.2 and a :30.0. My last 100 was a 1:14... ouch.
I've had a chance to swim some butterfly sprints yesterday and I feel like my breathing mechanics are getting much better with Coach Peter Linn's recent insight. I'm actually excited to have a shot at my butterfly at Long Course Nationals! I'll probably taper for a little over a week and hope for the best.
