30x100's Backstroke

Posted by Kevin Doak on Tuesday at: 5:29am (June 23rd, 2009)
Following a 40 minute warmup and pre-main set, we began a set of 30x100's. It was a challenging set for me but I held it together quite well. As usual, I wanted to be much faster, but I held my heart rates exactly as directed:

10x100's @ 1:35 [5 white + 5 pink]
2x200's @ 3:00
10x100's @ 1:40 [5 pink + 5 red]
2x200's @ 3:00
10x100's @ 1:45 [5 red + 5 blue]
2x200's @ 3:00
1:00 Rest
100 ALL OUT

The colors denote the "pace" which correspond to a personal time as well as a heart rate. As you can imagine, the set dictated and increase of heart rate over the course of the set.

I was holding 1:19's on the first set of 10, 1:17's on the second set of 10 and 1:18's on the third set. I'm disappointed in my times, but I was feeling quite good swimming the set. I've been experimenting with my arm turnover rate in backstroke and learning about myself each day. It's been very beneficial. I've made great progress slowing down my stroke and entering the water with my arms in a very clean fashion. This is a meaningful change because most times I just thrash around and waste energy in this way. This set was a great way to test some of my backstroke theories.

The last 100 I did by myself, practice had ended 6 minutes prior and I was determined to get in every last meter on the workout. I was exhausted, but I gave it my best. I was out in a 31.xx and touched the wall at 1:07.2. I've been much faster, but it wasn't a horrible time based on the set I just got done with. Let me tell ya, that was a ROUGH 1:07.

I spoke with Coach Peter Linn today briefly about the World Champ Trials. I'm interested in doing some research on the event since I know nothing about the topic. From the sounds of it, it's the 2nd largest meet of it's kind in the U.S. directly after the Olympic Trials. I hope everything works out and I can make it!
