Out of necessity, I swam with the CW workout group from 11am-1pm at Canham Natatorium at the University of Michigan. I was surprised to see the pool setup as short course yards. There were 40 or so swimmers who eventually showed up. I was the oldest by over 10 years. There were 3 high school swimmers there, the rest were elementary or middle school age. Come to think of it... I was older than all but one coach on deck! We did a small amount of yardage. A 2,100 yard warmup and went immediatley into the main set of:
3x100 @ 8:00
2x75 @ 6:00
3x50 @ 4:00
Obviously with that much rest, this was "Race Pace" swimming. I held 55's to 57's on the 100's backstroke. Not really that impressive for me. I should be down in the 53's with 7 minutes of rest between swims. The 75's were both freestyle and went a 39.0 then a 38.0. The 50's were all backstroke and I decended them 27.3, 26.7 and 24.97. I was having a hard time revving it up today, but it was a very challenging week on many levels.
Overall it was entertaining to swim with high schoolers. The things they talk about, and how playful they are sort of takes me back (if you will). I had a chance to sit in the hot tub for a few minutes after practice. It really hit the spot, I almost fell asleep in there. Speaking of falling asleep! I made it through my first 1 hour 30 minute Yoga workout last night WITHOUT falling asleep :). I'm really enjoying the Yoga, I'm envious of others who have been into it far longer than I have! I want to make it a frequent part of my exercise routines!
I have many other observations about swimming at Canham Natatorium I'll share in a separate post.
