Meet Reflection

The 2009 Michigan Masters State Meet was a blast! I'm really glad I participated, the relays were amazing and the individual events were very competitive! I took Monday off to reflect on my swims, watch the videos and analyze what I did right and what I could improve on.

Overall, I have a lot of work to still do. I did not achieve the times I had set out to swim this weekend. I use this blog to celebrate both my triumphs as well as the low points. This post will focus on a low point. I admit I had a mediocre swim meet, and I'm ok with that. It motivates me to work harder and improve my training techniques. I didn't feel very sharp this weekend. I know I was short on sleep but I don't think that had much to do with my performances. I didn't feel tapered, I felt worn out. I rested 4 days and shaved down so I expected much more. The high point of the weekend was my 50 Backstroke in 22.78 wearing a Speedo Brief. A solid time for me, my fastest since college. I still think I can drop over a second in this event by swimming it smarter and of course, without a tech suit. I had a lifetime best 50 fly at 22.49, but it could have been even faster.

The rest of my swims were sub par. My 200 Back was downright sad compared to my other swims. I'm a full 5 seconds from my lifetime best. My 100 fly was a full second off my lifetime best. My 100 Back was 1.3 seconds off my lifetime best. My 50 Free was a decent performance at 21.21, only 3 tenths off my lifetime best, I was very tired. My 100 IM was a full 1.3 seconds off lifetime best.

I fully expect to achieve lifetime best times almost every time I dive in the water rested. It's what I train for, and it's what I've done for the last 3 years. I dropped the ball this weekend, but I'll pick it up soon.
