Great practice with "Aquaholics"!

Posted by Kevin Doak on Sunday at: 10:37pm (January 25th, 2009)
During my time in Colorado, I had a chance to train with a Masters Team that goes by the name "Aquaholics" who practice at the University of Denver. After speaking with "Brett" during an evening practice he was finishing up, I inquired about the workout group. The next day I met "Brian" who gave me some details on when the Aquaholics practiced and decided to join them for a workout the following afternoon. On Friday I attended my first Masters practice ever. I was immediately impressed with the turnout! They filled 8 lanes with 3-4 people per lane at noon! I had the privilage of swimming with some great masters swimmers. In my lane I had "John" and "Gregory", next to me had "Susan von der Lippe", an Olympic Trials Athlete that swam the 100 Breast and 100 Fly during the Olympic Trials and did very well! She just happens to be 43 years old, the oldest female swimmer at trials! The practices even have coaches who develop workouts that fit into the 1.25 hour practices, after a 500 warmup we did about 4,000 yards of mostly sprints (right up my alley). The other swimmers, the sets and the intervals were challenging for me. The practice consisted of mainly sets of 50's and 25's of varying strokes and kicking. The coach Teri really mixed it up, it was a well rounded and interesting practice. I want to thank the other swimmers and coach Teri for letting me join in, it was a great experience! I sincerely hope I get to practice with them again someday.
