5New Short Term Goal

I had a good swim practice today, I did about 3200 yards. EMU's Jones Natatorium is back to Short Course Yards (SCY) till the spring. I did 1700 warm up and an "Animal Kick" set we used to do in college. I like it because it's a simple set that benchmarks my performance level quickly. It's 10x100's on the 1:30 best average. In college I used to average about 1:21 meaning I would get about 9 seconds rest before swimming again. Before I got my trials cut I was about a 1:18 average. Today was fairly sad at a 1:27 average. I'm making this my first goal now that I'm back in the pool. I will do an animal kick set and average a 1:15 pace before the USA Short Course Nationals meet in early December. I think it's a good goal because I do this set butterfly kick on my back. It helps build a strong core and promotes underwater kicking which will help my 100 Back race.
Speaking of the Short Course Nationals, I had a pleasant conversation with EMU's Coach Peter Linn about the meet. I know nothing about the meet or the facility in Atlanta. He mentioned it would probably be held in the Olympic Pool at Georgia Tech. This is the site of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. During the games it was a covered outdoor facility. A few years ago they enclosed the pool. I'm excited for the meet, it should be very competitive! Coach Linn also mentioned Eric Namesnik during our conversation. They used to go running together while down in Atlanta. I never met "Snik" but it was at his memorial service that I decided I wanted to swim at the Olympic Trials. He meant the world to quite a few people I know. I still see people wearing his "Swim for Snik" bracelets. I think he would be proud of the legacy he has left.
