Kevin = 1 Strollers = 0

I'm happy to say I completed my first 5k without being passed by any strollers! The course was much different this year with far more hills. I was disappointed with my time at a 27:28 but from talking to other runners it seemed like everybody was slower than last year. I averaged a 8:51 mile. I'll be interested to compare the times from last year to this year and see if my theory is true about it being a more difficult course.

I felt great for the first mile, I was keeping up with some good runners and split a 7:39 mile. The second mile was a 9:13. After the second mile is where I felt like I really slowed down. The 2.5 mile mark I felt like I was barely moving (which was true!). My final 1.1 mile was a 10:36. I gave it my all in the end. I know there are countless areas of this race where I could improve but I really enjoy swimming much more. Still its nice to have a change of pace.

After the race I saw my friend Heather and her husband Ryan. They both competed at EMU, Heather was on Crew and Ryan ran Track. Ryan, once again won the 15k, he always amazes me, the guy is incredibly fast. We briefly discussed the difficulties balancing a career and competitive sports. He has a medical career in the area.

Overall it was a great experience. I got to try a new 5k course in one of my favorite metro parks in Michigan and I'm proud of my performance. I also got to prove my superiority over the very competitive stroller crowd! Thank you to my mother who came to support me today!
