Coaches Meeting

Posted by Kevin Doak on Saturday at: 10:50pm (June 28th, 2008)
I'm attending the coaches meeting. The presenter is going over the philosophy of the event, lessons learned from test event, athlete services, coach services, access control, sport presentation and special effects.

Mark Schubert (National Team Head Coach) noteworthy quotes:

"I welcome you to the greatest swimming event in american history."

"Every athlete here is so very successful."

"18% of the athletes swam best times in long beach (2004 trials). This year we will crush that statistic."

"Respect the true purpose of the event which is to choose the best olympic team for the USA."

There was a lot of obvious information presented like "we are trying to create the best swimming environment", but there was also a few interesting things mentioned regarding the special effects! It turns out that they've planned quite a scene when a world record is broken. They've planned lights, lasers, pyrotechnics and a few unmentioned items. I can't wait to see it all!

I'm sitting next to Russell Mark, a USA Swimming Staff member who is in charge of Biometrics and video services like stroke analysis. He also handles the underwater video feeds you will see on TV. I met Russell at Kara Lynn Joyces house in 2005 before all going to a Tigers-Yankees Game. Russell has been a great resource I've run into at all the big meets I've been to lately starting with Ohio State. He mentioned the live video will be broadcast on www.nbcolympics.com

The current presenter just mentioned a new disqualification system being implemented. All disqualifications will be reviewed using underwater video feeds. This involves using those little cameras I took a picture of earlier today. Disqualifications have apparently never been handled like this before.

They're talking about how the Olympic team is chosen as well as doping control, drug testing, logo policy and athlete reimbursement (money for top 100 in the world)

That's about it, good meeting. I'm glad I went.
