Well, I'm exhausted and it showed in the finals, I finished with a disappointing 26th place and a 59.53. I just felt lethargic through the whole race. I was tired as soon as I did my start. I didn't rest at all for this meet so I can't expect too much. I'm excited to get back to work in the pool tomorrow afternoon in Michigan. I feel I can do better at kicking in my races along with working on my distance per stroke. I watched the video from some of my races and I'm taking more strokes than other swimmers. This shows that I'm not catching as much water. I got some great tips from a fellow Masters swimmer Paul Carter while I was at the meet today, it was great to meet him this weekend.
I had the chance to speak with some other backstrokers during the meet, quite a few of them hadn't made their Olympic Trial cut yet but were very close. Its hard to believe it was only about a month ago that I was in that low 58 second range with a little rest and just wanted so badly to get down into the 57's. I really feel for these guys. I know they can all do it, it just takes one good swim. If you can go a 58.20, you can certainly go a 57.99. Good luck to all the swimmers about to make their Trial Cut.
It was a great weekend, and although I wasn't impressed with my 100 Backstroke I have to keep in mind my goals this weekend:
- I wanted to get more race experience
- Race against the best of the best
- See California
- Meet some people
- Have fun
Lets recap:
- I got my race experience, as well as learning that I need to work on kicking and distance per stroke on fast sets
- I raced Michael Phelps, arguably the best swimmer in the world right now
- I saw California, though it would have been nice to have more time to sightsee
- I met Luke, Paul and Tiger among others
- I had a blast being at a meet with so much talent
Thanks for reading, it was a great weekend!
