Posted by Kevin Doak on Friday at: 3:27pm (July 3rd, 2009)
I took some extra time and edited my backstroke start video and added some narration so it made some sense:

3"Pool-Mate" by Swimovate

This is the first product like this that I've seen. There are plenty of options for swim watches which allow you to manually keep track of splits or laps by pushing a button on the watch or finger timer. This watch keeps track for you by the use of an accelerometer. It senses when a swimmer pushes off the wall and uses that information to count laps and take splits.

3Perfect Day for a Recovery Workout!
Posted by Kevin Doak on Friday at: 12:32am (July 3rd, 2009)
I had concerns I might not make it through practice without them fishing me up off the bottom of the pool. Luckily today was a 6,000 meter recovery workout. I actually did quite well today considering how tired I was before practice combined with a short night of sleep.
Today's practice was written by Sarah Volpe, the Assistant Coach of EMU. It was an IM/Recovery workout:
400 Swim
400 Kick (Right, Left, Front, Back)
3 Rounds:
8x50's IM order on rotating intervals of
(1:00, :55, :50, 45)
(:55, :50, :45, :40)

2Remind me not to do that again...
Posted by Kevin Doak on Thursday at: 8:32pm (July 2nd, 2009)
Due to a packed work schedule I had to do "Chest, Biceps, Triceps" P90X video in addition to the Ab video directly before a 2 hour swim workout. I'm already exhausted and I haven't even gotten in the pool yet. I'll report back on how absolutely desolated my arms/core are after this workout!

2New Video Today!
Posted by Kevin Doak on Thursday at: 12:43am (July 2nd, 2009)
Today I will do some starts and turns on camera! After a day off swimming I feel rested and ready for a great practice!
I can't beieve World Champ Trials are less than a week away. I feel totally unprepared to swim fast. I plan on doing a 4 day rest. I will not be shaving or wearing a tech suit for this meet. I've been advised by some fellow swimmers that I should taper for this meet rather than Masters Long Course Nationals. Although I would swim better with a full taper and shave I feel like I would be wasting it on one swim.

30100 Meter Backstroke of Course!
Posted by Kevin Doak on Tuesday at: 8:54pm (June 30th, 2009)
I forgot to mention I will be swimming the 100 meter backstroke at World Champ Trials. I hope to improve my butterfly and freestyle but for now, my backstroke is the only event I feel I excel in.
An acquaintance asked me today if I was still swimming. I smiled as I proudly said: "Yes, every day". I mentioned that I was swimming in the World Champ Trials in 2 weeks. Afterwards, they asked what that meant in the swimming world exactly... I started to explain that it was a big meet when I realized it's the highest profile Swimming Event in the United States this year!

30Entered in the World Champ Trials!
Posted by Kevin Doak on Tuesday at: 2:10pm (June 30th, 2009)
Yesterday I officially entered into the 2009 U.S. World Champ Trials! This will be the 2nd largest meet of my life behind the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. The time cut off was even more aggressive than the Olympic Trials cut, 57.69 vs. 57.99. I will swim on "Day 2" which is Wednesday, July 8th 2009. I'm attending simply for the experience since I'm deep into my training and don't care to let up too much for this meet. I will do my best as always but I don't have any set time goal for the event. I will do a 4 day taper for this meet and hope for the best.

29Thank you!

I began practice motivated and feeling great! My warmup and pre-main set was all feeling really good. Once our 3,000 meter main set started I was wearing down and loosing my drive to work hard. I actually considered sending myself home. Two things kept me in the water tonight:
1. My fellow swimmers in lane 5 today: Liz Koselka, Lori Morton and Sam Wensman. Although I went last in my lane today (AKA "Swimming Caboose"), seeing them swimming hard, kept me going to finish the set.

29Am I Actually in Shape?!
Posted by Kevin Doak on Monday at: 3:43pm (June 29th, 2009)
For the first time since college (or before college), I swam a meet and wasn't absolutely useless for the rest of the day. In the past I would swim "all out" and have a headache afterwards. This would last until I refueled my body with sleep, food and water and would usually take the rest of the day to start feeling normal again.
