Race Pace Saturday ended in a 1:00.00 in the 100 Fly http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/19/race-pace-saturday-ended-in-a-10000-in-the-100-fly
Saturdays are "race pace" a term indicating we will be swimming at the same speed as I would in a meet. Over the past few days I've realized that warmup at CWelite is the most comprehensive I've ever seen. The only thing I would change is a bit more kicking. Frequently this is our warmup (with notes):

400m Swim (take it slow if you want)
300m Social (this is kick, talking to other swimmers is promoted. Most people kick very slow)
300m IM Kick-Drill-Swim (a 75m of each stroke, great way to mix up muscle warmup)
4 x 100m Free @ 1:30 Orange to Pink (a great set to warm up your stroke and descend your times)
100m Orange (easy swimming)
6 x 50m Dive with 1/2/3 cycles Platinum @ :55 (Warms up your dive and sprint speed, the Platinum is meant to be full race speed)
100m Orange (easy swimming)

Our main set is below. Initially it looked overly complicated like many of our workouts. I'm torn on the issue really. Sometimes I enjoy mixing it up during a workout, other times I would really prefer some structure to a written workout like I had at EMU.

My set ended with a 90m swim from a dive. About half the swimmers simply finished the 100 meters for a time. I chose to do the same. I had done enough backstroke, I flipped over and swam butterfly. I lead my heat of butterfliers which included 2 NCAA swimmers, one of them being the BIG10 champion in the event. I touched first in a 1:00.00. A lifetime best in practice. I'm often amazed how amazing SCY swimmers really aren't LCM swimmers. The summer season lets me make that comparison. I can beat a 44 second butterflier and a 46 second backstroker in LCM swimming. That just makes no sense to me. These guys should be trampling me. Am I really a Long Course Meters swimmer? Based on my slow flipturns and solid speed through the water, something tells me... yes.

To put things in perspective, Wu Peng, our resident Olympian in the 100m fly, took out his 200m Fly in a 56.8 and touched in a 1:59. Reminder: This is practice.

Conclusions http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/13/charlotte-grand-prix-conclusions
I took a day to reflect on my performances at the 2012 Charlotte Grand Prix. I have mixed feelings about my swims. I'll start with my successes. My shaved and tapered times of 2009 in the 50m and 100m courses are now my unshaved/untapered times. This is a great accomplishment and about where I would like to be considering I was a little run down at the beginning of this meet. Some comparisions:

2009 Shaved/Tapered: 50m Back LCM - 26.64
2012 Unshaved/Untapered: 50m Back LCM - 26.73 (as low as 26.64)

2009 Shaved/Tapered: 100m Back LCM - 59.05
2012 Unshaved/Untapered: 100m Back LCM - 59.21 (as low as 58.02)

2009 Shaved/Tapered: 50m Fly LCM - 25.40
2012 Unshaved/Untapered: 50m Fly LCM - 25.24 (as low as 25.04)

2010 Shaved/Tapered: 100m Fly LCM - 59.87
2012 Unshaved/Untapered: 100m Fly LCM - 57.17 (as low as 56.31)

2009 Shaved/Tapered: 50m Free LCM - 23.97
2012 Unshaved/Untapered: 50m Back LCM - 24.15 (as low as 24.10)

I'm very proud of my time drops. They clearly indicate improvements in my training. With a taper, I'm confident I can lower all my lifetime bests in the 50/100 backstroke, 50/100 butterfly and 50/100 freestyle.

These fantastic results still have me yearning for more performance. This was my overall feeling from my swims this weekend:

I reached top 24 ranking twice during the meet. This earned me second swims (in finals) which was a great honor. The two events I placed well in was the 50m backstroke 26.73 and the 50m butterfly 25.24. This meet taught me that I have respectable SPEED. My speed is not off the start at all. In fact looking at the videos, I get smoked off the blocks whether it's backstroke or butterfly. I can't really say my speed is underwater either. I surface behind other swimmers of equal rankings. My speed is through the water. This actually makes me quite proud. Other swimmers can beat me off the blocks and underwater but in a few cases, I end up touching the wall at the same time as those same swimmers. The whole game changes in my 100 meter races. It's beyond frustrating how I can rank 10th place in the 50m backstroke in a high profile Grand Prix meet and then finish a very disapointing 35th place in the 100m race. The same goes for my 50m Fly. I finished 19th in a 50 meter race and 45th in the 100m Fly.

These facts bring me to the conclusion that just like every other time in my life, I have decent SPEED and pathetic endurance. As much as I would love to be a 25 second 50m backstroker, I want to earn a second swim at a Grand Prix infinitely more. On that same topic, I found myself pacing my 50 meter races. Forgive me for this bold statement, but I feel as though I have the speed to be a 25.0 second backstroker. That's a huge stretch considering that in the real world I am a 26.64 second backstroker. Yet I fall apart at the 35 meter mark. I can't maintain my speed for even a 50 meter race. There is something drastically wrong with that situation.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/13/charlotte-grand-prix-conclusions#comments Mon, 14 time than the morning, dropping 0.20 seconds from a 25.44 to a 25.24. If I had to do it over again, I would have a better breakout and only take one breath. My sub-par breakout, combined with 2 breaths almost certainly cost me time. I was proud to earn a second swim this evening and also drop time. I was seeded 18th, dropped two tenths and finished 19th... I'll take it.

I'm finished with the meet! Thanks Charlotte, I had a great time!
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/12/19th-place-in-50m-fly-in-finals#comments Sun, 13 May 2012 03:06:35 +0000 Kevin Doak 1497 at http://kevindoak.com Decent 50 Free, Bad 100 Back, Good 50 Fly http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/12/decent-50-free-bad-100-back-good-50-fly
This morning was a mixed bag of swimming performances. I lead off with a 24.15 in the 50m Free. This seems to be my "non-tapered" average time. I've had this exact time on a few occasions in the past 12 months. Shaved and tapered is typically my only chance for a 23 second swim. The time did not earn me a 2nd swim in the evening, I took 47th place overall. Next up was my 100m backstroke. My hopes were high for a high 57 or low 58 second swim. The race actually felt pretty good but later I would learn that I took out the race in a 28.49. My first 50 was significantly slower than I need to take it out. I should be a low 27 if I have any chance of a 57 second race. I brought it home in a typical 30.72. I was disapointed to see 59.21 on the scoreboard when I finished. That time was not only quite a bit off my goal for the weekend, it was downright embarassing. With a 35th place, I was nowhere near the 24th place it would have taken to make the bonus final. I didn't expect a lifetime best time this weekend or really even a second swim but I did expect a non-embarassing time. I disapointed myself. After a 2.5 hour wait (due to many long events), it was time for the 50m Fly. I was certainly ready to swim after so much rest. Really the only thing I did wrong was take too many breaths, perhaps a total of 4 breaths. I touched in a 25.44, a respectable time. It was good enough for 18th place in prelims and earned me an evening swim.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/12/decent-50-free-bad-100-back-good-50-fly#comments Sat, 12 May 2012 19:59:03 +0000 Kevin Doak 1496 at http://kevindoak.com Tied for 10th place in the 50m Back! http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/11/tied-for-10th-place-in-the-50m-back
I'm proud to say I finished well in the 50m back tonight! Historically I have a dificult time repeating and especially improving upon my morning swim. Today was different. I held back a bit on my effort during my race during finals since I fell apart so bad in the morning. The strategy worked well and I dropped a tenth off my morning swim time of 26.83 to an improved 26.73. Still a bit off my lifetime best of 26.64. I'm happy with my time today but wishing it had yielded a best time. My event was especially exciting because so many talented swimmers were in my heat. With a 10th place prelims finish, I nearly earned a spot in the Final heat! I was only about a tenth of a second off the top 8 heat. 50 Free, 100 Back and 50 Fly tomorrow!
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/11/tied-for-10th-place-in-the-50m-back#comments Sat, 12 May 2012 03:44:32 +0000 Kevin Doak 1495 at http://kevindoak.com 45th in the 100 Fly Prelims http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/11/45th-in-the-100-fly-prelims
This morning I had to double out of the 50m back into the 100m fly. I was initially concerned about the amount of time I would have between my races. If the timeline went to plan, it would have been quite a rush. Instead there was a meet delay which gave me an additional 10 minutes before my race. It turned out to be an ideal amount of rest before my race. My 100 Fly could have gone a bit better. I had a good dive, underwaters and breakout but I was a bit sloppy all the way to the wall in 25.62. I had a satisfactory turn but weak underwaters and a slow 2nd 50m of 31.55. I finished in a 57.17, certainly slower than I wanted to swim but understandable due to the 50 back minutes before it.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/11/45th-in-the-100-fly-prelims#comments Sat, 12 May 2012 03:26:12 +0000 Kevin Doak 1494 at http://kevindoak.com 10th in 50m Back Prelims! http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/11/10th-in-50m-back-prelims

IMAG0197.jpg

It was a solid morning. After a VERY busy warmup pool situation I was barely ready to swim. My first event was the 50m backstroke, an event I consider one of my most competitive. Since this is a very fast meet, I know that I will have a difficult time making it back to a finals session. That being said, I figured the 50 back would probably be my best chance. Although there was a 2 hour break between my warmup and my race, everything went fairly well. I had a strong start and breakout. My stroke felt good but I fell apart at 40 meters just like always. I clipped the laneline once again but touched in a near lifetime best time of 26.83! The pool itself looks satisfactory. I will leave it at that. From the looks of it, this used to be an outdoor facility which was enclosed at one point. Lucky for me the ceiling is very low, a great thing for my backstroke lane position issues since I have a tendency to bounce off the lanelines during long course races. I swam a 1,600 meter warmup and did 4 good starts. I don't feel great in the water, I'd like to blame it on the trip but I didn't feel all that good before I left on my trip either. My right shoulder and right knee are both still hurting from a few weeks ago. I may take a few days off after the meet to let them heal. They are annoying little injuries, nothing that will affect a race. I just don't feel very sharp in the water, probably just the result of the additional training we've been doing the last month or so. On the brighter side of things, the blocks and pads are ideal! They are both really good which was a pleasant surprise. Tomorrow I have the 50m back and 100m fly!
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/10/practically-had-the-pool-to-myself-tonight#comments Fri, 11 May 2012 02:12:58 +0000 Kevin Doak 1491 at http://kevindoak.com Safely in Charlotte http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/10/safely-in-charlotte
I arrived this afternoon in Charlotte, NC. I will go for a loosen up type swim before my competition starts tomorrow. Although I wouldn't change anything, I signed up for the events without seeing the order of events. I'm doubling out of both my 50m events into 100m events:

Friday
50m Back
100m Fly

Saturday
50m Free
100m Back
50m Fly

I actually think the 50m races will be a great warmup for my 100m races. I look forward to a great meet this weekend!
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/10/safely-in-charlotte#comments Thu, 10 May 2012 23:37:25 +0000 Kevin Doak 1490 at http://kevindoak.com Headed to the Charlotte Grand Prix! I've been wondering about my nutrition ever since college but especially since I chose to start eating vegetarian. Caroline was very generous with her time both assessing my current diet, making recommendations and taking questions. I'm very thankful for her assistance. And now for the good stuff:

During a quick meet and greet last week, Caroline provided me a sheet to record what I ate and drank over the next few days. I was conscious to not change my diet just for this experiment, therefore my food and drink intake was typical and recorded honestly. When I arrived today I provided Caroline my daily diet for the past 3 days. My own personal assessment was that I did a decent job of recording portions and times. I'll do much better next time being more specific and thorough. Once she started recording the calories, fat, carbs, protien and fluid the learning process began! The whole experience brought me back to my gradeschool days. I had a knowledgeable teacher in front of me working through equations while I took mental notes as she tossed out occasional affirmations and critiques along the way. I found myself smiling quite a bit as she simply looked at my food intake and made predictions and judgements (nice ones) about my lifestyle, cooking freqency and food preferences. It struck me a bit like a counseling meeting, which is sort of was. It seems as though you can learn quite a bit about somebody from how and what they eat! Caroline was incredibly thorough in her analysis of my diet. I feel like nothing was missed, it was really refreshing to work with a professional on this topic. Her conclusions were mixed, which I expected. In hindsight I wish I had made some predictions about her conclusions. A few of them I would have been right about, others, I was waaay off base. Here was what I took away from the meeting:

I'm getting enough protein, actually a bit too much, apparently a typical effect of a vegetarian overcompensating for lack of meat in the diet. I learned today that the average American gets about twice as much protein as they need... fun fact.

I'm not getting nearly enough fruits. This is one that I expected, something to work on.

I'm not getting nearly enough vegetables. This is one I didn't expect

My total calorie intake is 5,429 for the day, not too shabby. Those "daily averages" for most people is 2,000

I'm getting enough carbohydrates. I would have guessed this to be correct.

I'm nowhere near my ideal fluid intake. I never saw this coming. I might have guessed I'm a little low but I'm one of those people who carries a water bottle everywhere I go. I need to step up my game bigtime.

I'm getting enough fat in my foods. I never really thought this would be an issue.

Like many Americans, I need more whole grains and less white flour. Another one I might have guessed.

I really need to eat a meal before morning practice. I'm pretty bad about this one and it will be a tough transition to plan and make time for a meal before an early workout. I never really thought this would be much of an issue, I always assumed my dinner would carry me though a morning practice... this is incorrect for my needs.

My meal timing is not too bad. I nearly split my caloric intake 50/50 through the day. Apparently most other swimmers weight it towards the end of the day due to scheduling and practice schedules.

I need to always keep food in my car or locker to refuel after a workout. I always knew this was a good idea but I've never made it a reality other than the last few weeks.

I really appreciate Caroline's time and expertise. It was an honor to work with her. I hope I have a chance to follow up with her and do another assessment of my diet after I make some changes (and eat some baked potato's). Thanks Caroline!
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/07/thank-you-caroline#comments Mon, 07 May 2012 18:42:59 +0000 Kevin Doak 1487 at http://kevindoak.com A rough Saturday practice http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/06/a-rough-saturday-practice
It's been a rough few weeks. A month ago I was feeling amazing in the water. My practice times were impressive and my confidence was high. In the weeks that followed we did exactly what I've been waiting for, we got WORKED! The last two weeks haven't been incredibly hard, in fact last week was a recovery week. This week was back to normal but honestly I never really recovered from the 3 hard weeks in a row. I really need a few days for my body to rebuild. This feeling comes at a perfect time. Next week I head to Charlotte for the first time to compete in the Charlotte Ultraswim Grand Prix, a legendary (in a sense) meet. We will hold off the weights in the coming days and I will plan on resting a day or so before the meet to get ready to race. Especially exciting is the fact that this meet will offer the 50's in each stroke! I've been dying to get a time in a 50 fly and 50 back!

Back to my Saturday practice. It started bad and didn't get much better. Borderline embarassing. It was a set with 3 rounds, each different:

Round 1
65m Dive 100 pace @ 1:15
50m Push last 50 pace @ 1:00
25m Dive all out

Round 2
35m Dive 100 Pace @ 1:00
35m Dive 100 Pace @ 1:00
50m Dive 100 Pace

Round 3
35m Dive 100 Pace @ 1:00
1 x Power Rack with full weight
25m Dive at 50 Pace

Most swimmers did pretty well on this set. I should have taken the day off. I knew I was broken down but I was optimistic going into the set. I pushed myself as much as I could but there wasn't much left in the tank today. My first 65m felt like I was working way too hard. My feet flipped at a 28.8. not an entirely horrible split but it took a lot out of me. After a 15m kick out, we cruised back to the wall for our 50m "bring it home" swim. This last 50 meters is meant to test how you will bring your 100 meter race home. I've never been good at finishing 100 meter races and today it showed. I had almost nothing left when I STARTED the 50 meters. I touched in a very sad 32.5. I knew it was going to be slow, but I'm pretty sure some of the breastrokers beat me on that one.

After that sad start to the set, I decided to switch it up to butterfly. Last weekend that theory worked great for me. My backstroke was feeling bad, I changed it up and swam very well. It didn't work as well this time around. My butterfly felt pretty good the first 35m but was a real struggle on the second 35m. By the time we got up on the blocks for the timed 50m I knew I might be doomed. Other swimmers were :27's, my teammate next to me was a 29.5 and I touched in a 30.0, probably the slowest fly (dive) split of the day.

The third round was just as messy. I stuck with butterfly on this round. Lucky for me the 35 dive was not timed but I felt as though I held it together for the most part. I quickly strapped into the power rack and pushed off. I was pulling the entire rack, somewhere around 100lbs. It felt like it took forever, probably only about 10 seconds, but they were loooong seconds. As soon as I finished the rack I hopped up on the blocks to swim my last 25m of the day. I finished in a 11.9 against my teammates 11.5.

At the end of the day, I'm not sure I beat anybody in any stroke. I have good days in the pool and bad days. I finished with a smile on my face and enjoyed practice but it was a bad day for my times. I need some rest, some food and a few days off. I look forward to the meet next weekend and resting a tiny bit.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/06/a-rough-saturday-practice#comments Sun, 06 May 2012 05:54:43 +0000 Kevin Doak 1486 at http://kevindoak.com Seeing a Registered Dietitian on Monday! http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/06/seeing-a-registered-dietitian-on-monday
For years I've wanted to speak with a Dietitian about my general food intake and nutrition. Until this past week I wasn't aware of any resources on CW that would fulfil that need. It turns out there is a Registered Dietitan that works with our team already! I briefly met with her on Thursday to discuss my diet. I assumed I might be a tough case for her due to my vegetarian diet. I was prepared for her to say "there is no way you can get what you need without meat". I was nearly floored when she shook her head and replied "that doesn't matter at all, in fact there are some noticable benefits over a meat diet". I couldn't hold back my smile. I was relieved to hear she wouldn't be recommending anything outside my current diet. She was both helpful and knowledgeable with a lengthly background in a cardiac area, I'll get more details but I was impressed. She also (gently) schooled me on the difference between a "nutritionist" and a "registered dietitian". She is the latter, which is apparently much better thing.

As the meeting came to a close, she provided me with a sheet of paper to record my food and drink intake over the following days. When we meet she will review my food and do some smart person calculations on my caloric intake to determine if any changes need to be made. Although the meeting will probably be her correcting poor food choices, I look forward to hearing feedback from a true expert!
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/06/seeing-a-registered-dietitian-on-monday#comments Sun, 06 May 2012 05:17:11 +0000 Kevin Doak 1485 at http://kevindoak.com My Team http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/03/my-team

2012-club-wolverine-elite.jpg

I recently passed the 1 year mark with Club Wolverine Elite. It's tough to put into words how grateful I am to be part of this group. I enjoy every single day with this team. I find myself laughing and smiling more than I ever have with any other team. We work incredibly hard and have fun training. I'm not exaggerating when I say that it's a great honor to swim with these guys. In the past year I've learned a lot about my training. My time here has changed how I swim, lift and prepare for races. In many ways it has revolutionalized my swimming. It really has been a great year.

THANK YOU CLUB WOLVERINE!
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/03/my-team#comments Thu, 03 May 2012 11:08:38 +0000 Kevin Doak 1484 at http://kevindoak.com Primary Stroke Change?! http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/02/primary-stroke-change
I grew up fearing Butterfly like so many other kids. Lately, I'm more confident in my butterfly than any other stroke including backstroke. I've learned it's good to switch up your training every so often. It seems like every set lately has been a struggle to swim backstroke. I'll usually start the set backstroke since it's still my primary focus, race hard, only to get mediocre times from the coaches. I get a bit discouraged, and switch to butterfly for the heck of it. The set immediately gets better! I feel strong through the whole race! My times are proportionally better across the board. Somehow I'm becoming a butterfly swimmer, something I never really wanted to be. Today we ended our race pace set with a 50m off the blocks for time. This was at the end of 3 other 50's and I had about 30 seconds rest before the gun went off. I touched in a 25.5, a very respectable time for practice! Comparatively my 50 backstroke with the same rest earlier in the set was a 28.8. That's a significant difference even taking into consideration the start difference which I've learned is about 0.60 seconds.

I'm making progress, just in different areas than I expected lately.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/05/02/primary-stroke-change#comments Wed, 02 May 2012 18:05:24 +0000 Kevin Doak 1483 at http://kevindoak.com Fastest 50m Kick to date http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/04/27/fastest-50m-kick-to-date
My morning started out a bit rough. I worked through most of the night and by the time the alarm rang for morning practice I had only slept two hours. I was really dragging. I arrived at the pool and got ready to lift with the team. I began with some leg press and leg extension exercises after a brief warmup. As I headed over to begin my arm workout, I felt myself fall asleep while walking. I knew I had pushed it too far. I gathered my stuff and embarrassingly let the coach know I was too tired to safely lift heavy objects over my head. I explained that I would get some rest and be back for evening practice. Today I found my limit.

After a 4 hour nap (at what point is it just considered "sleeping"?), I was ready for a workout. I swhoed up early to practice to finish up my weights workout. To fully complete it I ended up missing some of the warmup, not a big deal. I jumped in at the beginning of the kick set, a set I really didn't want to miss! I felt pretty good during the kick set as usual. I especially enjoy the kicks sets because I see a lot of value in them as well as the fact that I excel in them compared to other swimmers. Today had it all, 50's, 100's and 150's fast. I really enjoyed it. We ended the workout with a single fast 50 with a few minutes of rest before it. Everyone kicked with a board, I heard a "33" and a "34" before a few "35" and so on, it was a good finish for the team after a long set. A few of the butterfly/backstrokers were peer pressured into a 50m kick underwater long course. Something I have never done before. I agreed to it to challenge myself and keep a little pride. I lined up against two of the fastest swimmes in the BIG10 along with teammate Wu Peng. I knew how I would finish against these great swimmers and I was totally ok with it. We climbed up on the blocks for a gun start from the coaches. After a good start I had a chance to look sideways to see Wu Peng start cruising away from me as if I wasn't even trying. The other swimmers were inching away as well. I held back a little because I wasn't entirely sure I could make it 50 meters long course without a breath. It was something I've done plenty of times with fins on but I don't think I've ever done it with no equipment. I remember seeing the 25 meter mark thinking... "wow, I'm only half way and I'm out of air!". I struggled that last 10 meters, it was really burning by then. I made it the entire way and touched in a lifetime best time of 27.8! It was about 2 seconds faster than ever before whether on top of the water or under. A 27.8 is a pretty respectable time for a 50 meter swim regardless! My teammates were all much faster, one was a 25.8, then a 25.6 and Wu Peng was a BLAZING 22.8. A time I wouldn't have thought was possible, and that was after a full 6,000+ meter short interval practice. Very impressive.

Training is going very well. I keep dropping time!
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/04/27/fastest-50m-kick-to-date#comments Sat, 28 Apr 2012 00:45:32 +0000 Kevin Doak 1482 at LCM training has been fantastic. After a spirited speech by head coach Mike Bottom a few weeks ago, there was a significant increase in workload. It was just what I needed to feel better about my training!

Last week the London 2012 clock broke the 100 day mark. It struck me that a year ago at the 2011 Eric Namesnik Grand Prix I was staring at 470 days. Time flies. The day I took these pictures we were practicing when the clock turned from 94.00.00.00.0 to 93.23.59.59.9. While we were swimming a structured warmup, everybody in the pool stopped. I was confused until I saw everybody looking at the countdown clock with 20 seconds left in the 94th day. As we waited for the clock to zero out I looked around at everybody staring at the clock and reflected upon this amazing thing I was part of. When the clock broke the zeros, everybody cheered. It was a really cool moment. I thought to myself, this might be a once in a lifetime experience. Here I am, in the best shape of my life, training with some of the fastest swimmers on the planet, cheering at an Olympic countdown clock. Wow. This really is an amazing time in my life.

I'm regretful that I haven't had time to post more in the last few weeks simply for the reason that I've had some of the best training stories of my life. I've had some of the best and worst practices of my life. I've had moments of personal glory leading kick sets against Olympians, only days later to find myself not only at the back of the lane, but probably the slowest swimmer in the pool. All these experiences were amazing learning experiences for me. I've felt pain in the last few weeks I haven't felt since last summer. The long course meters training is an entirely different game and I love the challenge.

I've had some great LCM sets lately:

Race pace 3 x 100m @ 15:00
Backstroke - 59.1 (fastest practice time ever)
Backstroke - 1:01.4 (still darn good for practice)
Backstroke - 1:01.7 (I held onto it, not a bad 3rd race in 40 minutes)

Backend 100 Speed - 3x [broken 100m and then push 50m for time]
Fly - 27.7
Fly - 27.9
Fly - 27.7 (fastest push time ever and it was 20 seconds after finishing a broken 100m)

"Get out swim" which was a 50m kick push)

There are so many more stories I can't remember but I've really been enjoying my training lately. The team is great, everybody is swimming well and there have been some really impressive times from our race pace sets. I'm excited to see what our team can do with some great LCM training!

Hi Luhny.
workouts and I couldn't be happier about it! I've been pushed to my physical limit so many times this past week and it's been a great learning process. I've had some fantastic sets, and some really bad ones as well but I've found value in every one of them. Back in college I knew I was working hard when my left shoulder would start giving me some pain. I haven't felt pain like that since last summer. I was beginning to think my shoulder didn't have that issue anymore yet and all of a sudden, we increase our workload and the pain is back. I never worry about it, it's just a reliable barometer of my practice workload. I'm really proud of the training we've done this week, I hope we continue training at this level!

More details and a few 1479 at http://kevindoak.com King of the kickboard for a day http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/04/03/king-of-the-kickboard-for-a-day
Being on a team with so much raw talent combined with hard working swimmers, there aren't many days I can say that I excelled in the group. Many days, especially when I'm swimming Middle Distance, I get beat by bodylengths, it's unreal. Today was a green swim set with a focus on kicking:

MAIN SET

3 x

15m UW from a dive blast + 35m dolphin kick on back moderate
50m Kick Blast for time
25m easy - stop - 25m Blast to a great finish
50m swim from a dive for time, keep rates up with small moderate kick

TWEEN

6 x 100m pull @ 1:30

I held with the best of the group during the 15 underwater from a dive but when we got to the 50m kick for time, it was MY set. I still think I can do much better at these kick sets but today was certainly respectable. Each of the 3 rounds I was either tied with the fastest, or I was the fastest. The top time of the day being my 32.3. I've kicked faster but that was probably the fastest without rest in the middle of a set. I still refuse to do armstrokes during kick sets, a habit everybody else in the group chooses to embrace. An unwritten rule on CW/UofM is that "anything goes inside the flags" which translates to the fact that you can do entire armstrokes during a dedicated kick set. It's something I've chosen not to embrace. I feel that a kick set should be just that, kicking. It should be known that I indeed always take one arm pull into the wall. I've always done this along with every other swimmer I know. I like limiting it to a single stroke though especially from what I've seen on this team. A mostly innocent rule of "inside the flags" seems to creep into "right at the flags" and then to, "one pull before the flags along with within the flags". This seems to have grown into people downright swimming for 8-9 meters in and out of the wall. To me, that's crazy. That's not a kick set. For this reason, when we do short course swimming, I just get trampled by everybody since they are kicking for 40% the pool length and I'm kicking for 98% of the pool length. When the pool is long course, it's a different story and I love every second of it. With so many fewer "inside the flags" portions of the pool, it turns into a real kick set. Suddenly my stubborn attitude toward the unwritten rule starts paying off. There are moments of these kick sets where it's just weird how fast I'm pulling away from other swimmers, by the 25m mark, I'm a body length ahead of somebody who started a split second ahead of me and I maintain or gain on that lead in the last 25 meters. Kick sets like these just put a big smile on my face. I love swimming with talented swimmers, and although I typically get beat, there are days when I don't. This was one of those days.

I'm a good kicker and I'm on my way to being a great kicker.
<div class="field field-type-text Freestyle. His Speedo Fastskin3 suit ripped during his start off the blocks. He went on to beat Michael Phelps in the race ironically. This might be one of the few times Nathan and I have something in common. We both own entirely useless expensive suits. The difference being, I paid $361.00 for mine, his was probably a sponsorship. I plan on contacting Speedo regarding this suit. I'm dissatisfied with the suit to the point that I don't think I even want a replacement, a refund would be appreciated but more than anything I just want to give it back to them. They can keep my money... lesson learned. Speedo really dropped the ball with this suit. I still haven't met a swimmer who likes the suit.
event at a big meet before. This weekend I experienced my limit of training. Thinking back, I've had a heck of a month:

I've been swimming every day for about 2 weeks which included a 2 day meet last weekend prior to this 3 day meet.

This meet was my 4th meet in 30 days which covered 2 continents, travel to 4 countries, 2 international flights, two 5 hour drives, and two 1.5 hour drives and staying in multiple hotels, away from my own bed.

Between practice and meets, I worked long hours and did my best balancing life, some of those balancing acts failed and I disappointed important people in my life

In retrospect, to successfully finish out this tough month, I should have scratched the 100 Free, 100 Fly and perhaps the 50 free. I should have taken last Wednesday off and been fresh to drive to Purdue on Friday to tear up the 100m back Saturday (today). I made the choice to swim all my events with hopes that I'd drop some time in the 100 fly or 50 free. I will learn from this experience.

I made the judgement call to scratch my 100m back today and drive home early. I gave it a lot of thought and I felt that it was not benefical to swim a 58high-59low 100m backstroke. A bad swim would hurt my self esteem and make me further question my training. I know what I need to do and I valued some additional rest versus a bad swim. As soon as I scratched, I started to regret it, mostly out of guilt. I get so few chances to race LCM and here I was throwing away the chance. The decision made me feel like a quitter, like I was retreating from a battle, yet, even a day later, I think I made the right choice.

I look forward to some continued training changes, I've been heading in the right direction by increasing my training load. I've been sporadically joining Middle Distance and remaining in Sprint on certain days. I think the increased workload will eventually pay off and it helps me get through the workouts which before this change I felt were too easy or not relevant for a 100 meter race. With mixed results at the Indianapolis Grand Prix, I look forward to how the coaches and swimmers will reflect upon the Sprint program as it stands. In my opinion, they would be crazy to maintain the status quo. I've been making some recommendations over the months regarding the need for more work, I hope their changes, if any, will at least semi follow that course. I want the best for my team.

I'm taking Saturday and Sunday off to rest up. I look forward to getting back to work on Monday after my batteries are recharged!
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/30/2410-in-100-lcm-free-finals
My morning swim of 24.18 was a bit of a disappointment. I had really hoped to be a 23-anything. I prepared for my evening finals race exactly as planned. I slept, ate and arrived at the pool in time to do a full warmup and relaxed until my race. I was ready to swim. 10 minutes prior to my race I decided to try my Fastskin3 suit again. The $361.00 investment I made while in London. As I was putting it on, it ripped. This was the 2nd of this type of suit I ripped. I'm very disappointed in the Fastskin3 suits. During the meet I made it a point to ask swimmers and coaches about their experiences with the suit. I haven't heard a single positive story. At this point I'm really wishing I had my $361.00 back. Comparatively, my $180.00 (or less) LZR Elite Jammer suit is still going strong after 10 meets. It's certainly lost a bit of it's compression but it hasn't ripped or failed me once. Speedo certainly took a step backward with this new suit, and I'm not the only person who thinks that. It will be interesting to see how they handle the public reaction to the suit.

Anyway, back to the race. I prepared well, ripped a suit, quickly changed into my alternate suit and got ready to swim. I had committed to change my stroke prior to my race. After my morning swim I (again) realized how ugly my stroke is. The buzzer went off and I had a great start. After a few dolphin kicks I surfaced with a good breakout and immediately started swimming with my improved stroke. Surprisingly I held it together till the 35 meter mark before I started to revert to my ugly stroke out of sheer exhaustion. I touched in yet another disappointing 24.10 for a 12th place finish at the meet. Although I was pleased I swam faster in finals, 0.08 seconds is not exactly a great time drop. I can be happy that I swam faster with a newly altered stroke. I have some video of my race I'll watch to study where I can further improve.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/30/2418-in-the-50-lcm-free
I slept well and arrived at the pool in plenty of time for my event, the 50m Freestyle. Since this is not an especially competitive meet for me I knew almost any decent performance would earn me an evening swim. During warmup I really wasn't feeling very good in the water. I felt sluggish, just run down. I really haven't taken a break in about 2 weeks so it kind of makes sense. I was hoping to touch in a 23-anything to put me in striking distance of the ever elusive 23.49 Olympic Trial cut but it just wasn't there this morning. I had a sloppy race and touched in a 24.18, significantly behind the trial cut. While reviewing the video, I'm finding my freestyle worse looking than ever. I truly have bad form, it's a miracle I can hack my way through the water in 24 seconds. Moving forward I will work on my form, I think a better stroke will yield a time drop. I don't know if it will earn me a 23.49 but at least I'll be less embarrassed to watch my freestyle videos!

I'm feeling like I'm running on empty at this meet. My first swim, the 100m Free was good but everything since then has been sub-par. I will swim the finals this evening in the 50 free as well as the prelims 100 backstroke but I'm considering scratching my finals 100 backstroke and heading home early instead. I just don't think there's much left to give at this meet. I need some rest.

On the brighter side of things, I've really enjoyed West Lafayette, Indiana! This is a great college town. I chose to stay close to campus and was pleased to learn that there is a free Trolly which picks me up right in front of my hotel and drops me off at the pool. It couldn't have worked out better! The campus is really nice and the area is easy to navigate. There is a great selection of restaurants and shops around where I'm staying. The pool is great and the meet has been running very smoothly. The weather has been ideal, just a little brisk in the mornings and not too hot during the day. I went out to dinner with a few CW teammates last night so it's been nice knowing a few people at the meet and having a few people to cheer for. I've met a few coaches while on deck including Akron, Toledo and Purdue's head coach. Everybody has been really nice. I sincerely hope I get to swim another meet at this facility, it would be great to visit this city again!
Looks like I was wrong. I took out my 100 free in a 25.20, slightly slower than the morning but not a dealbreaker regarding a good time. I fell apart on the way home, worse than usual. I touched in a 53.64 which was four tenths slower than my morning swim. I took last place in my heat. I went from 21st to 24th place, sort of disappointing. I chose to scratch the 100 fly this evening. At the end of the day I was put into a relay swimming butterfly. I knew some of the people on the STRAY team but wasn't sure who was in my relay. I showed up to the correct heat but the wrong lane. As the race was beginning I definitely looked like an idiot. I shuffled over one lane and met the correct relay team, just in time to get up on the blocks. I didn't get to see the split but with a relay start and some good underwaters I'm confident it was a 22 second swim. Relays are always a blast. Your individual performance all of a sudden legitimately earns support and cheering right behind your lane. I'll always sign up for any relay, they're far more exciting than an individual race!

Day 2 will be a little tougher than this morning with the 100 Fly, 50 Back (as part of a relay), 100 Back and 100 IM. I might get put in another 200 Free relay as well. I should mention that I really appreciated my free relay today letting me swim first to get a flat start time, that was very nice! Some goals for tomorrow:

100 Fly SCY: 50.5 (A 49 second swim is a bit aggressive, I'll be happy with a 50.x)
50 Back SCY: 22.5 (I want an even better swim!)
100 Back SCY: 49.5 (I want to break my own pool record!)
100 IM SCY: 51.x (I think with some improved fly and back combined with a new breaststroke and solid free, I can drop a second off my 52.64)
50 Free SCY: whatever (If I have a chance to lead off again, another 20.x would be great but I'll be pretty run down)

Looking forward to another great day!
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/25/2012-usms-state-meet-day-1-expectations-met#comments Sun, 25 Mar 2012 05:59:11 +0000 Kevin Doak 1447 at http://kevindoak.com Registered for the 2012 Michigan Masters State Meet! http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/18/registered-for-the-2012-michigan-masters-state-meet
Here we go again! I'm on track to swim more meets this year than any other year of my life. 2008 was another big year for me regarding meets. 2012 will demolish my 2008 meet count record. I signed up for the 100 IM. I have a good feeling I might break my lifetime best of 52.64 in the event! I imagine it will be another tough week in practice so the Michigan Masters State Meet probably won't be an epic performance on my part but I do enjoy the meets and seeing my friends.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/18/registered-for-the-2012-michigan-masters-state-meet#comments Mon, 19 Saline Head Coach) was nice enough to loan his pool to us for a few hours! I was impressed how thankful our group was to Todd. It made me proud to be part of a gracious and humble team. Coach Brunty seemed to enjoy having a group of talented coaches and athletes in his pool as much as we appreciated the chance to practice there.

I arrived late to the pool due to an GPS error. It seems that since the middle school took over the location of the old high school, at least half our team showed up in the wrong place. I find it odd that the new Saline high school is about 8 years old and somehow this is still an issue. Fun fact: while I looked for the build date of the school, I found out Saline High School is the largest high school in Michigan. Once I got some phone directions from Todd, I eventually showed up at the right place and got changed for the workout. I greeted Coach Brunty and stretched with the team for a few minutes. During warmup the coaches flip flopped on what workout I should swim. I had glanced at the workout and it seemed as though either would be good for me. The sprint workout was definitely easier, and my "I can do anything" attitude steered me toward the MD workout. When the coaches asked me my preference, I responded that I'd prefer the MD workout. They supported my decision, perhaps reluctantly.

After a 25 minute warmup, we were ready to start the main set. As a spoiler, I entirely underestimated the "300y white" portion of the workout. This just ruined my set. I chose the wrong workout.

The rounds went something like this:

300y white @ 3:30 + 6 x 50y @ :45

each round added more distance to the first portion and subtracted the number of 50's while adding to it's interval. It looked manageable at first. I was wrong. I never swim "300y white" on a 1:10 pace backstroke. That's not an easy interval for me. Shortly after I started I switched to freestyle which wasn't much of an improvement.

I was last finishing the 300's each time and last on every single 50. Neither was a surprise, especially since I was the only person swimming backstroke while others swam freestyle. Still, my times were horrendous. I never kept track of the 300's but the 50's were ugly. I was pushing 28's to 30's on each one. Very slow for me, bordering on embarassing.

As the set went on, I got slightly faster, dipping into the low 28's on the 4 x 50's on :50 seconds. After some yellow pace swimming and a 300y white we had just 3 x 50's left. I was finally ready to swim. The coaches recommended "dive" on these which would have meant a backstroke start for me. I declined because I wanted a consistent time compared to the rest of the "push" set. The freesytlers were going :22's and finished with a :21, not too shabby for MD. I actually finished the set quite well since it was a 1:05 interval. Amazing what a little rest can do. I went from :28 mid to:

#1 :25.2
#2 :26.1
#3 :24.4

I was proud of my last 3 swims considering what I had just been through. It was a rough week for me. I broke out of my mini taper from London, recovered from a wacked out sleep schedule, lifted hard twice and had some difficult ab workouts to swim a 24.4 from a push. I'm so glad to have that week behind me and relax a bit this weekend!
<div class="field http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/14/not-achieving-goals-adding-more-workouts
After almost a year with Club Wolverine, I don't feel like I've achieved any significant time drops. That's not to say I haven't accomplished anything, I've learned a lot and achieved an Olympic Trial cut in the 100 Backstroke. I went from a 1:01.40 to a 57.44 in a few short months. I had a number of meets where I swam 58 second backstroke races, the best being a 58.0x at the Pro Dual 1 meet in Ann Arbor. My performance in London of a 57.73 was not impressive to me. It reinforced some concerning facts I've mostly kept to myself. I don't feel as though I'm working out enough and the workouts we do swim aren't as intense as I'd like. I feel I need to either add some workouts or sets myself or join the Middle Distance group. Admittedly, the Middle Distance (MD) group is beyond my current abilities for a few reasons:

They're staggeringly fast, not only at short distances but 200+ meters, they just never slow down.

They all swim freestyle, I would choose to do Backstroke and therefore not be able to keep up

The coaches don't think I can handle the workouts, they're partially correct.

I'm running out of time to make a big change like this before Trials. Today I did some additional dryland and a P90X ab workout. Just slightly increasing my workload for now while I consider my options.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/14/not-achieving-goals-adding-more-workouts#comments Thu, 15 Mar usual today. Sprint got a pretty easy set. This generally seems to be the trend. I long for a workout that splits the difference. I really don't want to do 300's backstroke. But we did a 37.5y Dive swim + 50y kick + 12.5y swim. We did that 3 times. Sure, it was "all-out" but still... Not especially hard. It was challenging, but only for about 2 minutes a piece. I can't really say I'm that tired afterward. I need to be challenged more. I'm sure this training works for somebody, but I need additional training. Although the Olympics aren't my goal, I want to be trained like an Olympian. We can do more than this.

I was:

Round took it easy with the weights today, nothing too heavy. I find it's best to ease into it after a break.

The pool workout was surprisingly relevant. Maybe I just crave some special attention or something self-centered like that. I was singled out and told to put on 3lb ankle weights with fins. I did 10x25y @ :30 seconds followed by 1:00 off and then 10x25y @ :25 seconds. It was a great set for my underwater kicking! I felt like it was especially relevant for my 100 Backstroke since my 2nd wall is especially sub-par.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/12/back-in-the-pool-at-canham
Monday was a frustrating day for me. It was good to be back on the pool deck but I butted heads with a few of the coaches regarding the last month of my training. A majority of the coaches were tied up with the college team while they were competing at BIGTENS, we were mostly on our own with the exception of a volunteer coach. When I arrived on deck today one of my coaches discussed my London races with me and my training leading up to those swims. There wasn't much positive about the conversation in my opinion. He voiced some opinions, I voiced some opinions but we really didn't get anywhere. He felt out of the loop with my training and yet he was the one who left Ann Arbor. Apparently it was my responsiblity to update him daily on what I was doing... an entirely unspoken agreement. It was frustrating. In short I don't feel like the training I'm doing is especially relevant for a 100m long course backstroke race. It's very much a 50m Free type training. In no way do I want to change the program, it may work for other guys but I've been begging the coaches to allow me to kick more or join the MD group. The conversation left me thinking I will have to take matters into my own hands without their support.

Although I may not write it here often, I've said it a million times. I'm not doing nearly enough kicking or nearly enough VO2max or Aerobic Olympic Trial cut in either the 50 Free or 100 Fly was a bit of a longshot but considering I was about 0.50 seconds off my 50 free and 1.0 second off my 100 Fly, I thought a shave and taper would yield some good results. I was wrong. With preparation, a new suit, a shave and the majority of a full taper, I came up significantly short of my goals. Today was a failure for me. I don't usually say stuff like that, but I feel pretty bad about my performances.

50m Free LCM: 23.78
I bought a new speedo suit yesterday. I've heard mixed reviews on this suit, regardless of what stats speedo throws around. In a few words: I'm not impressed. It is by far the most painful suit I've ever worn with little or no performance benefit. In fact, I may even argue it slowed me down but proving that would be impossible. I'm unsure if I'll ever wear it again. I was sized for the suit and tried it on once successfully. This morning when there was 15 minutes till the start of my race, I began putting the suit on. It's the most difficult suit to put on that I've tried, this is counting the full body tech suits. Midway through the put-on process, my $361.00 suit riped wide open up the right side. I might have let out some choice words in the locker room at that point. I shook my head, quickly changed into my old speedo suit and immediately headed to the speedo booth. They weren't busy luckily. I said "My brand new suit ripped and I swim in 13 minutes. They were very helpful, quickly got a new suit for me and assisted me in putting it on. It was a stressful few minutes. I arrived to the "ready room" late, the organizers were visibly upset and I apologized. After a few minutes of waiting, we were called to the door to parade out on the deck. Once we got behind the blocks they blew the wistle and then told us to stand down. A laneline had broken. This is the 2nd big race 50 free where a long delay has occured on my heat. It's very distracting. As they fixed the lane marker, we sat in the seats they had provided to each lane. It felt like forever, in reality, it was probably 6 minutes. We were called up again and I had a near flawless race. I took one breath, just as planned. I really ran out of steam at 40 meters, an increasingly concerning endurance issue I've delt with my entire life. I finished and looked up to see a disappointing "23.78". It was the best time of my life without a tech suit... by far. Yet, it was nowhere near the 23.49 Olympic Trial cut. I had failed to achieve this goal for the meet. I shook my head and got out to cool down and prepare for my 100 fly in 35 mins.

100m Fly LCM: 56.30
I had enough warmdown time between my 50 free and the start of my 100 fly, initially I was concerned whether that would be an issue. I made the right choice to swim both events. I was ready to race when our heat got called up. I knew I had to have a great race to have a chance at the 55.2 cut. My former best time was unshaved and untapered at 56.31 in Minnesota. Since live results died at some point today, I'm not sure how fast I took out my first 50, it felt good but I hit the wall a little short which made my slow turn even slower. I had good underwaters and surfaced past 10 meters. I finished it the best I could to look up and see a "56.30". I fully shaved and tapered to drop 0.01 seconds. That's really disappointing. I remember when I could taper in college and drop a SECOND or more in a 100. I was not happy about that time. I exited the pool but stayed on deck to see one teammate swim a 54.30 and another swim a 53.06, both very good swims which made finals.

Overall, I'm disappointed. I came to London for a few reasons, most importantly to see and race in the facility. I did that and I'm proud that I had the honor to compete. Past that, I really wanted another Olympic Trial cut. Not only did I not earn another cut, but I was nowhere near either cut. 0.3 seconds in the 50 free and over 1.0 second in the 100 Fly. Really quite sad. Perhaps the worst part about today's performances is that I don't have a single tangeable thing to blame it on. I would almost feel better if I could say: "I slipped on the block" which caused a horrible entry into the water, therefore, that might be worth 1.0 second. There is no story like that today. I felt rested and prepared to race, and it didn't amount to anything I thought it would. I gave it my all, and it wasn't enough.

As nice as London is, I'm eager to get home and get back to training. I need to make some changes or I'm going to swim another 57 second 100 back again at trials. I want to believe I'm faster than that. In my mind, I think a 55 is possible but something drastic has to change. What I'm doing isn't working. 57.73 is a long way from 55 and I know that. I'm a realist and I have a lot of work to do to achieve my goals. Time for a change.

London: Thank you for a great experience.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/08/good-swims-but-not-good-enough#comments Thu, 08 Mar 2012 13:58:42 +0000 Kevin Doak 1432 at http://kevindoak.com Yea, just put that picture next to the Olympians http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/07/yea-just-put-that-picture-next-to-the-olympians

IMAG0110.jpg

kevin-doak-100-back-british-nationals.jpg

I was leaving the pool, looked to my left and saw a familiar photo on the wall. The wall has a bunch of British Olympians, and some guy with a yellow cap. It stopped me dead in my tracks when I saw it!
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/07/yea-just-put-that-picture-next-to-the-olympians#comments Wed, 07 Mar 2012 19:21:54 +0000 Kevin Doak 1431 at http://kevindoak.com First one in the water http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/07/first-one-in-the-water

IMAG0109.jpg

This afternoon I showed up at the pool at 12:45pm local time to swim. I stretched for a few minutes and as I was walking to the side of the pool, a lifeguard reminded me that the pool was closing at 1:00pm. Disapointed, I squeezed in 10 minutes of swimming followed by two great starts. I got dressed and left the pool to kill some time at the Westfield Mall, just steps outside the London Aquatic Centre. There I got some good Thai food from my buddy at the restaurant. I've seen this guy almost every day since I've arrived, he seems to be making friends with all the swimmers. I relaxed for an hour and headed back to the Natatorium around 3:30pm. I stopped off at the Speedo building to check out the new Fastskin3 Super Elite suits. I've heard both good and bad things about them. Prior to my backstroke, I had every intention of buying a new LZR Elite suit like the one I had. Mine is worn out a bit so a new one was a good idea. Speedo naturally was only selling their new expensive suit, not last year's suit which I had. I chose not to buy one then and raced my 100 Backstroke in an old jammer.

I chose to get body scanned by speedo today. It was an interesting experience. Overall it was a bit unsettling. First off, you're basically in a store with people shopping around for goggles, everybody is fully clothed. You are asked to remove your clothes behind a curtain, put on a speedo brief suit and step into what looks like a large photo booth. You stand on two feet marks on the floor and hold onto handles on each side. Music plays and a voice tells you what's going on, step by step. 9 lights on both the front and back flash as 36 cameras photograph your body. A program takes measurements after a 3D scan of your body is complete. Afterward, they can recommend which suit you need. In my case, the machine was broken. They scanned my body 4 times while I heard the error message "ding" come across the speakers each time. The speedo staff finally gave up and just measured my body. The whole process sort of seemed like a gimmick when they could have easily measured my body by hand. After the measuring, they recommended I try on a SR10 size suit. For some crazy reason they decided to change all the sizes from normal waist sizes to some arbitrary numbering system, I've yet to make sense of it. After talking to a teammate with an SR6 suit (smaller), it seems as though mine might be too large. I feel like it's pretty darn tight as it is though. The suit itself doesn't feel slick, it's actually very heavy fabric. Downright thick. It also doesn't have any drawstring at all. Since it extends above your hips, you just have to hope the speedo engineers got all the math right to keep that thing on!

I decided to try it out in the competition pool as soon as it opened at 4:30pm. I was the first one in the water. It was neat to dive into the calm water of the newest, fastest pool on the planet. I warmed up for 15 mins and got out. I'm relaxing for the night before my two big races tomorrow. I'm a little concerned with the time between events. The only race between the 50 Free and 100 Fly is the Womens 800 Free. There will probably be 4 heats at 9 minutes per heat. I SHOULD have about 40 minutes to cool down from my 50 free to prepare for my 100 Fly. Historically I don't do well with short rest between events but 40 minutes should be enough, even for me.

Looking forward to racing again!
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/07/first-one-in-the-water#comments Wed, 07 Mar 2012 18:28:32 +0000 Kevin Doak 1430 at http://kevindoak.com I met Liam Tancock on accident http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/06/i-met-liam-tancock-on-accident
I don't typically throw names around, but this was yet another example of me putting my foot in my mouth. I was talking to my teammate Hulmey and some guy walks by and begins talking to him. Hulmey, being the classy guy he is introduces me expecting me to know who the heck it is. I tell the new guy my name and ask for his, to which he responds "Liam Tancock". Now, I've seen enough backstroke race results to recognize the name, I smiled foolishly and apologized. They spoke for a moment and Hulmey reminded me that Liam is a former Olympian and the world record holder in the 50m Backstroke. Oops.

Liam was a nice guy, it was an honor to meet the fastest backstroker on the planet... on accident.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/06/i-met-liam-tancock-on-accident#comments Wed, 07 Mar 2012 01:08:24 +0000 Kevin Doak 1429 at http://kevindoak.com That's just weird http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/06/thats-just-weird
I looked up my results from 2008 Olympic Trials and I literally swam the EXACT SAME RACE in London as I did in Omaha. It's spooky:

OMAHA 2008
Reaction Time: 0.68
50m split: 27.28
100m split: 30.45
Time: 57.73

LONDON 2012
Reaction Time: 0.57
50m split: 27.28
100m split: 30.45
Time: 57.73

That's just really odd. Although I don't feel this way... nothing says "plateaued" like an identical race 4 years apart. Wow.

EDIT: it should be noted that I achieved the same time in 2012 in an old jammer suit as I did with a new full body LZR in 2008. I swam my 100m backstroke in 57.73, I took it out in a 27.28 and brought it home in a 30.45. It was the third fastest time I've swim the event without a tech suit. As much as I told myself not to read to much into my performance today, I'm disappointed. The fact that my swim at the pro meet a few months ago was a 58.0 unshaved and untapered, a 0.30 second drop with rest and a shave is not impressive at all. Regardless, I accomplished what I wanted to and my swimming performance was in no way embarrassing. I moved up in the rankings and took 39th overall. It was a solid swim and I learned from it.

One topic I can be proud of is my race execution. I did a TON of things right. My start was great, breakouts were good and I had a faster turn. I only brushed a laneline once with my hand, for somebody who has generally poor lane position awareness, that was a great improvement! The experience was everything I hoped and expected it to be. 50 free and 100 fly on Thursday
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/04/i-swam-in-the-2012-olympic-pool#comments Sun, 04 Mar 2012 14:51:36 +0000 Kevin Doak 1423 at http://kevindoak.com Ready for London http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/03/ready-for-london
I'm shaved and semi-tapered. Ready for the 100 Back in the morning.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/03/ready-for-london#comments Sun, 04 Mar 2012 02:47:31 +0000 Kevin Doak 1422 at http://kevindoak.com I must be an "American Pizza" guy http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/03/i-must-be-an-american-pizza-guy

IMAG0091.jpg

I hope I'm not hurting any feelings here, but wow... it really feels like I've had some bad pizza since I've been outside the U.S. I had the chance to go out on the town tonight and see London and I turned it down. I chose to stay in and rest up for my big race in the morning. Instead I ordered a pizza from a local place near my hotel. My thoughts are: "it's technically food". Which I'm still thankful for considering there are starving people in the world. It made me realize I'm quite a snob when it comes to pizza. I'm so used to how the U.S. does it, speaking of most of the chains as well as independents. The pizza I had in France as well as the pizza tonight was drastically under par. For some reason, they choose to cut the toppings in MASSIVE chunks and just pile them all in the middle of the pizza. I got a veggie pizza but others were like this as well. Although I might have guessed this, I don't like eating a huge chunk of onion. I find that pizza with toppings placed like this provides you with any one piece with a large topping of one kind, and none of the other kinds. It leaves me wondering if the kitchen staff is just lazy or if this is normal around Europe. Is it too much to ask to chop up the toppings a bit more so it covers the whole pizza? Again, hope I'm not hurting any "traditional Italian" feelings here, I just doesn't seem to make any sense to me. Regardless, I had some decent dinner and ready to wind down for the night. I swim the 100 Backstroke around 9:00am Local Time, 4:00am EST.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/03/03/i-must-be-an-american-pizza-guy#comments Sat, 03 Mar 2012 22:46:41 +0000 Kevin Doak 1421 at http://kevindoak.com Watching Day 1 of the meet! I had a chance to swim in the French Olympic Trial pool in Dunkirk, France (North France). It was a great facility! I swam about 1,000 meters (LCM) before lap swim time ended. Overall I'm feeling good, no noticeable jetlag that everybody was warning me about. I quickly made my time change adjustments and I think I'll be in good shape for British Nationals this Sunday when I swim the 100m Backstroke in the 2012 Summer Olympic Pool. I'm very excited for the meet, I'll get to swim with two of my teammates from CW. I'm happy to be able to be there to support them both.

After swimming at the location of the French Olympic Trials, it struck me that I'm racking up swimming in some of the greatest facilities on the planet! This fact clearly isn't a mistake, if I have a chance to swim in a high profile meet in a legendary facility, I do whatever I can to make it happen! The list is growing:

Omaha in 2008 (2008 U.S. Trials)

Atlanta in 2012 (site of 1996 Olympics)

Montreal in 2011 (site of 1976 Olympics)

Dunkirk in 2012 (site of 2008 and 2012 French Trials)

**SOON** London in 2012 (site of 2012 Olympics)

I'm proud of that list, it embodies some great swims and great memories. I'm ever aware of my place in swimming and realize how much of an honor it is to swim in these legendary facilities where the greatest swimmers ever have swam. I'm humbled and excited each time I earn a place in a meet at one of these facilities. I love swimming.

I'm going to try to get a picture of the Dunkirk pool but honestly I feel weird taking pictures of a pool with random swimmers in it. I also don't speak French so that would make a situation where security yelling at me that much more awkward. I'll try to get a French speaking person to take one while I'm swimming. Problem solved.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/02/29/new-experiences-swimming-in-france#comments Thu, 01 Mar 2012 02:45:56 +0000 Kevin Doak 1417 at http://kevindoak.com Swimming out a long flight in Amsterdam http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/02/28/swimming-out-a-long-flight-in-amsterdam

IMAG0048.jpg

It was a great flight and I found a long course pool to swim in once I arrived in Amsterdam! I found an "OmniSport" facility listed online. Since I was short on time before a train to Belgium, I got a cab to the pool. I knew it would be steep but I underestimated how bad it would be for a 13 minute cab ride. €40 Euros later ($52.80 U.S.Dollars) I arrived at the pool. Admission was €3.30 which was entirely worth it considering it was a 50 meter long course pool. Online I had read the following:

The pool is now reopened and has completely renewed. There are more pools available: a 50m pool, an instruction pool, a diving pool, and a recreation pool. It's a very interesting pool to visit! The pool was quite crowded. I swam in the least crowded lane and never had to share with more than one person. Most lanes were occupied by rec. swimmers doing breastroke. Pace clocks were on both sides, digital, and easily visible. The pool is beautiful, and one of the best you will ever see.

The review was dead accurate. There was relatively high security for a pool. Stainless steel body height turnstyles with RFID bracelets.
http://kevindoak.com/blog/2012/02/28/swimming-out-a-long-flight-in-amsterdam#comments Tue, 28 Feb 2012 12:27:05 +0000 Kevin Doak 1416 at http://kevindoak.com
